Art Photography

Art Photography can be a real challenge. But if your me that only makes things more interesting. Which is why when Robert Stokes asked me to photograph his work I was very pleased.

Part of the challenge in photographing art is that your job is essentially to represent the artists work without adding too much to it.  This can be a challenge when using artificial or studio light because while in some more commercial settings a flashy look can be good. In this case its not.  I took great care to highlight Roberts brush strokes and all the texture of each piece because it was such an integral part of the piece.

I am a strong believer in collaborative photo shoots. This is why i work with an artist I carefully back and forth ideas until we are both happy. An artist is often times the only one who notices all the details that go into making a piece of art. So it is only natural that they are the best collaborators there are for this kinds of work. Art photography and product photography share a lot of the same types of disciplines. Composition and lighting being one of main portions of this challenge. Then what’s left is how the piece is supposed to emotionally charge its viewers. All these factors come into play when making the perfect photograph.
